Going to the Dogs

By September 28, 2011January 11th, 2014All About Durango

The Durango Dog Park, one of 32 City parks (Yes, 32 parks!), is an excellent place to let Fido or Ubu run wild. Spread out over 23-acres at the base of Smelter Mountain, the Dog Park is home to large open fields, dirt pathways and a long stretch of the Animas River, which by the way is great for them to cool off in after playing in the hot sun.

At any given time during the day the Dog Park hosts 10 to 20 dogs in its “off leash” setting. Being Durango, everyone is friendly, and it a social thing for the pet owners as well. I’ve had many good conversations with neighbors and community members while Charlie got his energy out.

Summer is the most popular time, but Spring, Winter and Fall are all good times to visit. There is public parking on the North side of the Park and access is easy via HWY 160 West. Have fun!
