Durango’s Parks and Recreation

Durango is not only known for infinite outdoor recreation activities, the city has as world-class attractions as well. Mesa Verde National Park, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the historic Downtown Durango are just some of the most visited destinations.

The famous Animas River Trail is just one portion of Durango’s system of trails and public parks. There are over 97 miles of both dirt trails and hard-surface trails for biking, hiking, and skating. Administered by the City Parks and Recreation Department, the Durango’s system includes many relaxation and recreational opportunities.

The Parks & Recreation Department manages Chapman Hill Ski Area and its roller and ice skating rink. Dog lovers can visit the 5-acre pooch park where dogs can play off-leash with plenty of area to roam and run.

Durango is also recognized as a mountain and biking road destination. This is where the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is conducted. The World Mountain Bike Championships in 1990 and the 2001 World Cup were also held in Durango.

The Fort Lewis Recreation Complex, situated at Fort Lewis College and constructed by Parks and Recreation, offers playing fields for soccer and softball. Winter carries other outdoor activities such as snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling. The place reputation for fly-fishing and hiking has grown to a whole year activity.

The city of Durango continuously strives to achieve excellence and high distinction in the establishment of quality services for the benefit of its residents’ wellness while maintaining economic vitality by developing community resources.

As an acknowledgement to the efforts of the City of Durango, National Recreation and Parks Association awarded Durango’s Parks and Recreation Department a Gold Medal Award. This award recognizes communities in the United States that display excellence in resource management, long-range planning, and agency recognition.

Durango is certainly the kind of city that a resident will fancy about. It is a genuine Colorado town, with boundless opportunities for recreation activities, rich history, thrilling future, and countless real stories to tell. Due to its historic charm, rich culture, vibrant nightlight, and esteemed restaurants, huge corporations and small street businesses thrive in the city of Durango.

With over 16,000 residents, Durango is the leading and biggest town in southwest Colorado. This 21st century old west urban is well-known for having friendly and real residents and wonderful environment where people work and play hard. Durango is also undoubtedly one of the cheeriest cities. Locals often say that they decide to stay in Durango not for fortune and fame, but for the superb and wonderful quality of life in this glorious city.
